Treatment for Head, Neck, and Jaw Pain

Head, jaw, and dizziness-related complaints can significantly affect your quality of life. Difficulty concentrating at work, feeling unsteady during movement, or withdrawing from social activities are common consequences.

At Move Well Physiotherapy, we do not view your symptoms in isolation. Instead, we understand them as part of a complex interaction between the head, neck, jaw, and balance system.

Our goal is to identify the root cause — not just treat the symptoms.

The Connection between Head, Jaw, and Neck

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most complex joints in the body. It is closely connected to:

  • The neck musculature

  • The deep and superficial cervical muscles

  • Posture

  • The balance (vestibular) system

Tension in one area directly affects the others.

Neck tension can trigger headaches and jaw pain.
Jaw dysfunction can contribute to neck pain and pressure sensations in the head.

Combined with dysfunction of the upper cervical spine or vestibular system, dizziness may also occur.

That is why at Move Well we never treat “just the neck” or “just the jaw” — we treat the entire system.

Neck Pain and Headaches – We Look for the Cause

You may recognize these symptoms:

  • Sharp pain when turning your head while driving

  • Daily headaches after a workday

  • A stiff neck in the morning

  • Pressure in the back of the head

  • Mild dizziness or instability during quick movements

Is it stress?
Posture?
Overload?
An old injury?

Often, it is a combination of several factors.

During a comprehensive initial consultation and functional assessment, we evaluate not only the location of your pain but your overall movement and load patterns. This allows us to address the true underlying cause and create lasting improvement.

Possible Causes - A Move Well Perspective

Posture and Movement Patterns

Prolonged forward head posture increases sustained load on the neck muscles. The head weighs approximately 4–5 kg (8–11 lbs), and this load increases significantly when the head tilts forward.

The result:
Chronic muscle fatigue, tension, and headaches.

We analyze your daily posture and develop targeted strategies to reduce strain.

Stress and Increased Muscle Tension

Stress activates the nervous system. Shoulders elevate, jaw muscles tighten, and teeth clenching or grinding may occur.

This persistent background tension can lead to:

  • Tension headaches

  • Jaw pain

  • Neck stiffness

  • Pressure sensations in the head

We combine manual therapy techniques with breathing and relaxation strategies to regulate the nervous system.

Sleep and Nighttime Strain

An unfavorable sleep position or unsuitable pillow can keep the neck in a strained position for hours.

Typical signs include:

  • Morning stiffness

  • Reduced mobility

  • Pain upon getting up

We provide individualized advice on ergonomic adjustments for both sleep and work environments.

Weakness of the Deep Neck Muscles

The deep cervical flexor muscles provide precise stabilization of the spine. If they are underactive, superficial muscles such as the upper trapezius compensate.

However, these muscles are not designed for continuous stabilization — overload develops.

Through specific retraining, we restore natural muscular balance.

Dysfunction of the Upper Cervical Spine (C1/C2)

The upper cervical vertebrae play a crucial role in head rotation and balance integration.

Restrictions in this area may cause:

  • Cervicogenic headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Neck stiffness

  • Pressure in the back of the head

Using precise manual techniques and active stabilization exercises, we improve mobility and control.

Whiplash or Previous Injuries

After trauma, the nervous system can become more sensitive. Muscles may remain in protective tension, movement patterns change, and symptoms persist.

In these cases, we work systematically with:

  • Movement control training

  • Load management

  • Gradual exposure to movement

How We Help at Move Well

Our treatment is based on current scientific evidence and tailored individually to your symptoms and lifestyle.

We combine:

  • Targeted manual therapy for jaw and neck mobility

  • Repositioning maneuvers for BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)

  • Trigger point therapy

  • Vestibular rehabilitation

  • Individualized exercise programs (stabilization, relaxation, habituation)

  • Postural and ergonomic guidance

  • Stress management and awareness of parafunctional habits

  • Breathing technique optimization

Our goal is for you to:

  • Move freely again
